The Shaded Ledge Pigeons Were Looking For
Pigeon Guards matter for rooftop systems in Peoria because a solar array gives a pigeon exactly what it wants. Feral pigeons descend from rock doves that nested on cliff ledges, and they treat buildings the same way. The space under a panel is a covered ledge with shade, a view and protection from hawks. In a West Valley summer that shade is valuable, and once a pair settles in, they tend to stay.
Why nests under panels are a problem
Pigeons can breed at any time of year because they feed their young on crop milk, so a nest under the array is rarely a one-season visit. Over time the space fills with sticks, feathers and droppings. That debris traps heat under the panels, holds moisture against the roof after monsoon rain, and can block water flowing to the gutters. Birds also peck at and pull on wiring, and droppings on the glass shade the cells below them. Then there is the noise and the mess on the patio below.
How the guards work
Guards are galvanized or coated wire mesh, cut to height and fastened to the panel frames with clips designed for solar modules. The mesh runs along the full perimeter of the array, closing the gap between the panel edge and the roof. Nothing is drilled into the roof or the panels, so the roof penetrations stay as they are. Mesh is sized so air still moves under the array to help keep the panels cool.
Cleanout comes first
Putting mesh around an active nest just traps birds or eggs inside. Before any guard goes on, we look under the array, clear out nests and debris, and remove droppings from the roof and the panel glass. We look for damaged wiring while we are there. If birds are actively nesting, we discuss timing with you before the cleanout.
Tile roofs and HOA neighborhoods
On concrete tile roofs, the gap under the array varies from one tile to the next because of the tile profile, so the mesh is trimmed to follow it. In neighborhoods with HOA design rules, common in newer master-planned areas such as Vistancia, the color and visibility of anything added to a roof can matter. Mesh in a dark finish usually blends in with the panel frames, but check your HOA guidelines if you are unsure.
Pair it with other work
If you are also getting a cleaning, a checkup or a reroof that takes the panels off, adding guards at the same visit avoids a second trip. On a reinstall, we can put guards on before the array goes back into service.
What a Pigeon Guard Job Includes
The work that makes guards last, not just the mesh.
Under-array inspection
We check how far the nesting has spread, whether any eggs or chicks are present and whether wiring has been damaged.
Nest and debris removal
Sticks, feathers and droppings are cleared from under the panels and from gutters and roof valleys nearby.
Panel and roof cleaning
Droppings are washed off the glass and the roof surface so the panels produce fully and the mesh goes on clean.
Clip-on mesh installation
Mesh is trimmed to the roof line and clipped to the panel frames around the whole perimeter, with no drilling.
Wiring check
Any chewed or loose wiring under the array is noted and repaired, with a separate price if it was not on the estimate.

Typical Costs Around a Pigeon Guard Job
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Solar panel cleaning before the guards go on | $150 to $350 per system |
| System inspection | $150 to $300 |
| Solar labor rate | About $100 per hour |
Ranges from HomeAdvisor's solar repair cost guide. The mesh installation itself is priced per job from the array's perimeter, roof type and how much cleanout is needed. Your written estimate is the price.
How Pigeon Guard Installation Works
1. Look underneath
We check the array perimeter and the space below the panels for nests, eggs, debris and wiring damage.
2. Quote in writing
You get a price for cleanout, cleaning, mesh and any wiring repair, listed separately.
3. Clear and clean
Nests and droppings are removed and the panels and roof are cleaned.
4. Install mesh
Mesh is trimmed to the roof line and clipped to the panel frames around the entire array.

Pigeon Guards Questions
Do pigeon guards damage the panels or void the warranty?
Guards that clip to the panel frames do not drill into the module or the roof. Using clips made for solar frames is the standard approach and avoids altering the panel itself.
Will the birds just come back?
They will try, especially if they nested there before. Once the full perimeter is closed, they cannot get under the panels, and most give up and move on.
Do guards make the panels run hotter?
Mesh with an open weave still lets air move under the array. Clearing out packed nest debris usually improves airflow compared with what was there before.
Can you install guards if pigeons are nesting right now?
We check for eggs and chicks first. Depending on what we find, we may schedule the cleanout and mesh for a later date so no birds are sealed in.
